There are several versions of Nessie Kapatelis linked to this account. The mun likes to change things up from thread to thread, and since Nessie is something of a minor character in her canon, there's no real reason to make separate journals.

So there's a few different places where you can reach Nessie!

Teenage Nessie:

[sticky entry] Sticky: Permissions Post

CHARACTER NAME: Vanessa "Nessie" Kapatelis
CHARACTER SERIES: Wonder Woman v2 (DC Comics 1987 to 2006)

[OOC]
This is the permissions list for OOC (out of character), activity.

Backtagging: I am always down for continuing a thread to a logical end. I don't care if it takes you a week or more to tag back -- real life happens, and it takes precedence over RP.
Threadhopping: Yes, of course! The first comm I was active in, back in the day, had a rule about taking adult content off comm and onto personal journals. Making a fresh post to continue a thread, for whatever reason, is cool with me.
Fourthwalling: Acceptable, since Vanessa's former identity as the supervillain Silver Swan is well-known in the DCU. (If I am playing her as a teenager, that is before the Silver Swan mess and it would not be appropriate.)
Offensive subjects: adult Vanessa's story has themes of mind control, forced surgical alteration, sexual coercion, and a person being trafficked (for the superpowers granted by their cybernetic implants). I can handle these themes with a little warning that's where you want to go (a PM will be appreciated).

[IC]
This is the permissions list for IC (in-character), activity:

Hugging this character: Go for it, she's quite affectionate.
Kissing this character: Platonic kisses are go; romantic kisses ok if that's the meme.
Flirting with this character: Yup, she's down. Character is a straight, cis female, so she'll flirt with men and gently turn down any women. (I don't think she's ever had an enby show interest.)
Fighting with this character: Teenage version - no, she's not very good. Adult version - yeah, she's able to defend herself. Silver Swan - yes, if you want to fight a supervillain with a long range sonic scream, go ahead.
Injuring this character: Down for it. No limits, though a heads up that maiming might occur will be appreciated.
Killing this character: Sure. It doesn't have to count for canon to her personal storyline, so that's fine.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Yes, but she does have some fairly robust mental defenses after being the target of Edgar Cizko (Dr. Psycho), a telepathic supervillain with a grudge against her. You can probably slip in with Vanessa unawares, but once she catches on she would likely be able to kick you out of her mind.

Warnings: Again, the "adult" and "still Silver Swan" versions of Vanessa that I can play deal with themes of mind control, forced surgical alteration, sexual coercion, and human trafficking. These things don't have to come up, and I will warn if they do.
The "teenage" version of Vanessa has not yet experienced these things and will likely be safe for most people to play with. She did have a close friend who committed suicide, but that is unlikely to come up unless the other player brings up similar themes of death and loss.

Finder's Fees

[Vanessa Kapatelis stares up at the blank white ceiling of her cell. The whole area is illuminated with harsh fluorescent lights that gleam off the chromed metal features of the room -- the frame of the observation window, the surgical machines and implements, the mechanically locked door, and the operating table that she's currently strapped down on. Vanessa is hooked up to monitoring devices and has been scanned by several free-floating mechanical devices that zip back and forth from small access ports in the walls. These ports would be too small for a human to access.]

[Vanessa is doing her best to breathe steadily and calmly, trying to find a calm center... a way to look at her current situation without panic. It's difficult, though. She never expected a discussion about kinks and past sexual experience to lead to being kidnapped, but Vanessa's life has been strange ever since her mother brought Wonder Woman home with her, back when Vanessa was thirteen. In a way, being kidnapped to once again be unwillingly operated on and turned into a cybernetic version of the Silver Swan is par for the course.]

[Is there any way that Wonder Woman will be able to find out about Vanessa's kidnapping? Perhaps, but it's not very likely. And it's even less likely that Diana will be informed in time -- 'in time' meaning, before the physical operations and the brainwashing begin. If Veronica Cale can hire a shapeshifting metahuman like Gemini to kidnap her, and then increase the payment within a day when demanded, then she likely also has enough money to hire Dr. Edgar Cizko.]

[Dr. Psycho... Vanessa shudders at the thought. He's a powerful telepath, and he has a personal grudge against Vanessa. Her mental defenses are naturally strong, something he hadn't expected in his first forays at tormenting her. But they have clashed often enough that he can get in and do damage quickly, before she can throw him back out. And his expertise is likely needed to brainwash her into the raging monster that is the Silver Swan.]

You are going to regret this, [Vanessa says to the empty room, and the recording devices that are no doubt present if out of her line of sight.] Diana may not come for me, but I won't make things easy for you.

[As far as Vanessa can tell, she's still within the same facility that Gemini delivered her to -- there was no being knocked out, and no transportation that she endured while awake. (She felt that tickle when Gemini's bladed arm was against her throat, but doesn't know that a tiny piece of Gemini's substance was transferred onto her throat. It's still there, having escaped detection by the scientists and their machines).]

Late Nights

original thread here

Vanessa is just your typical overworked social worker, called up out of bed to deal with the fallout from a trafficking ring bust. Hours have passed since then, hours dedicated to figuring out safe places for the kids to stay while others in the department do their best to track down more stable relatives to take custody.

She's got her head resting on one hand as she nurses a cup of coffee and waits for her order to be deposited at her table. It's been a very long night and she's hungry, and tired, and... possibly waiting for you to join her?

How Much is Too Much?

Steve Harrington sends a text message:

I have a voicemail from Mike at 1am. He starts to say something, but then throws up instead.

And Nessie responds with her own concerns about the situation.

Twisting and Turning, Your Feelings Are Burning...

Parkman Plaza, Boston Common -- Vanessa Kapatelis is seated on the concrete retaining wall that connects the three bronze statues known as Learning, Industry, and Religion. She is between the man depicted using a compass and reading a book (Learning) and the man using a jackhammer (Industry).

Nessie is dressed rather smartly in a light pink skirt, pale mint green sleeveless blouse, and a blazer of a slightly darker pink. Her curly hair has been tamed with a flat iron and braided back away from her face. Her brown flats match the brown purse that she clutches on her lap. She would blend in with any of the young professionals that frequent the business sector of Boston. However, Nessie looks rather stiff and nervous as she waits, scanning the crowd for familiar faces.

A message was left on her voicemail a few days ago, instructing her to call back at a particular number. Jason Todd answered and confirmed that he'd located Donna Troy. They arranged a time to meet in Boston, when Julia Kapatelis would also be in the city. Nessie would get a chance to explain things to Donna, and hopefully they'd go on to meet up with Julia.

The therapist said it was necessary to talk out her feelings with her mother, but despite all her own training in the field of counseling, Nessie was still frightened of it. Julia hadn't meant to harm Nessie, ever, but the harm had still occurred. Addressing it... was not something that the Kapatelis women did.

And if Donna decided this problem was not worth her time... Nessie would either have to do this alone, or resort to having Jason come along as backup instead. (Nessie appreciated his willingness to help, but worried about how Julia would react to Jason.)

Nessie clutched her purse closer and silently counted to time her breathing, 'In -- two, three, four, five -- and out...' just like she'd done for Jason once. She had to stay calm.

Trouble Comes Knocking

Cross-pollinating Nessie's canon with Detroit: Become Human since she tagged a Connor.

[ Thread here ]

In this universe, Nessie is still an ancillary member of the Red Hoods, a gang that controls the drug trade and the illegal weapons trade throughout the city. However, some of the lieutenants in the gang are androids in this continuity -- specifically Brandy Lynn for this thread, who runs an operation of drug mules and converting androids who show signs of Deviancy.

Greetings from Hawkins, Indiana

Crossing Nessie over into Stranger Things canon because she tagged an Eddie Munson.

[ Thread here ]

In this continuity, Julia and Vanessa Kapatelis had to relocate away from Boston in 1986 (which is the current year for the most recent season of "Stranger Things"). Nessie is 17 years old and a junior in high school when she transfers to Hawkins High. (I've aged her up for the purposes of the crossover.)

I won't be mentioning Wonder Woman, as she would likely be fictional in-universe and conflict with the canon. (Luckily, since season one of Stranger Things takes place in 1983, the comic books would still be the pre-Crisis run of "Wonder Woman volume 1" instead of the Perez-written reboot that Nessie comes from.)

But Dr. Edgar Cizko will figure into Nessie's backstory, if/when I get to it. He's a creep there, and he'll be a creep here.

And now for something completely different...

Vanessa is still the Silver Swan. Rather than throwing all kinds of enhancements on the Silver Swan without a thought to whether she'd be able to survive the drastic surgery, and forcing her to attack the Themysciran embassy in what amounted to a suicide mission... Veronica Cale instead planned for long-term use of the weapon she purchased for 10 million U.S. dollars.

The Scarecrow wonders why he hasn't heard of the Silver Swan, and she answers him.

****

Silver Swan also went around asking "personal" questions on the same meme post. The one that got a reply was directed at Castiel.

Once is Happenstance, Twice is Coincidence, Three Times is...

Bishop says, or rather quotes: "I will do my best. It's a pity that doing one's best does not always answer."

And Nessie responds, There's something to be said for the striving, though.

A time traveller arranges a sort of "meet cute" with a villain in recovery. Said "villain", who has been trying really hard NOT to be bad anymore, has no clue that she's become a target.

[[OOC: Hilariously, I did not realize what kind of character that Bishop was, and tagged him with Nessie completely at random. Only to later find out that he's trying to create a race of augmented humans by kidnapping people all through time. Vanessa, how do you keep attracting the attention of villains who just want to use you?]]

A Philanthropic Appeal

Vanessa Kapatelis is not a woman to give up easily.

Perhaps that's what the people at the Wayne Foundation were hoping for, when they informed her in no uncertain terms that their donations budget was set and none of them had the authority to increase the amounts. Perhaps that's what the secretaries at Wayne Enterprises were hoping for, as she worked her way up the corporate ladder in an elaborate game of phone tag, looking for someone to speak to regarding the Wayne Foundation and the shortfall that social services would be dealing with this year.

When an Amazon fights, she identifies the best place to strike, and goes for that first. When slaying a monster, you don't hack at its feet -- you aim for the head.

This wasn't a monster or a physical fight, but the principles could still apply. Aim for the head -- that's why Nessie drove out of the city proper on her day off, looking as put together and professional as she could, and headed up to the most exclusive neighborhood still considered part of Gotham. Her destination -- Wayne Manor, ancestral home of the Wayne Family, currently housing (most of) the children of Bruce Wayne. It wasn't very likely that she'd get a chance to speak with the acting head of Wayne Enterprises, but she had a presentation to give, or at least the materials to drop off.

Emmy Rossum, in a black shirt and yellow blazer, with her hair up

Vanessa spent what remained of her downtime, after all those calls, to put the presentation together. It was a collection of the financial data for her department and information on the ongoing opioid crisis -- she even used the color printer in her own apartment and put it together in a slim, sturdy binder with plastic sleeves for the pages. And if she could make a good impression on whoever she spoke with, it could get passed on to Timothy Drake-Wayne with a good word for the social services department.

(She hadn't forgotten her initial reason for wanting a way into Wayne Manor. But her visit had to look legitimate, and the looming trouble of ongoing fallout from the widespread malpractice of the nineties was definitely real. She had to treat it with all the seriousness it deserved, for its own sake as well as making sure that she appeared to have no ulterior motives for entering the manor.)

Nessie parked her car a short distance from the drive leading up to the manor. It was out of the way enough that she wouldn't block anyone else trying to get in, and shaded by a tree. She picked up her handbag and tucked her presentation binder under one arm, then locked up the car and walked away.

The walk up the drive was pretty long -- the rich enjoy their privacy -- but she'd walked further and in worse conditions while wearing heels before. She was determined. Finally, she made it to the main gate and pushed the button that would alert the house beyond that a visitor had arrived.

The low, grating buzz set her nerves going, and in the silence that followed, Nessie allowed herself a moment to worry about a bad outcome to this visit.

He's the Boss

The door to the director's office was half open, and Nessie knocked lightly on it to announce her presence -- then peeked inside the room. The two of them had a thirty minute meeting scheduled, in about three minutes, and Nessie wanted to be sure he remembered.

Felix Desidero was seated at his desk, phone receiver to one ear, looking frustrated. When his gaze flicked over to Nessie at the door, he held up one finger in a 'wait a minute' gesture. Nessie nodded and slipped into the office, gently closing the door.

"No, of course I don't want people dying of drug overdoses, but what do you expect me to do with the children they leave behind if we have one-third of our normal operating budget?" Felix demanded. Whoever he had on the other end of the phone line spoke for a while... a rather long while. Felix's expression got sourer and sourer as he listened.

Nessie slid into the chair across from him, and gave him a sympathetic look. He rolled his eyes skyward and used one hand to make a choking motion toward the receiver, silently expressing his frustration. Nessie grinned, but covered her mouth so that no laughter could escape and possibly be overheard by the caller.

"Well, maybe, just maybe if our Representative in the General Assembly wasn't a Republican who cares more about the rights of corporations than the lives of people, we wouldn't be dealing with so many damned drug overdoses that you have to rob Peter to pay Paul!" Felix rubbed at one temple, as if trying to stave off a headache, and his tone was deliberately calm when he next spoke. "I know you're dealing with the whole county, and your boss is dealing with the whole state, and the governor wants to look like he's doing something about this drug crisis. But forcing city-level budget reorganization just led my mayor to gut our senior care services and the counseling budget for our foster kids."

Nessie gave Felix a frankly horrified look at that comment. She hadn't heard of that yet.

"Look, just... maybe the General Assembly can be pressured into passing some kind of relief bill? If there's something on the table, we can get activists pushing for it... Yes. Something, anything. I've got a meeting that I should be at, and I'm sure you do, too. Please call me back, with some good news next time? All right, thank you."

Felix hung up his landline phone. "I'm sorry you had to hear that, Kapatelis. Things aren't going well at all."

"So I gathered," Nessie replied. "Are you serious? We've only got one-third of our operating budget, and they want us to stop offering counseling and therapy to our traumatized kids?"

"People are addicted to opioids, thanks to all the overprescribing that went on in the nineties," Felix said. "So we passed laws to restrict easy access to large amounts of the prescription medications, thinking that would help. Turns out, people are just switching to heroin to get their fix. The spike in heroin-related deaths is making New Jersey look really bad, and the governor doesn't want that."

"Of course not," Nessie scoffed.

"So they want to throw more money at the health departments, which I'd be all for... except they're taking the money from our social services departments." Felix sighed. "There's nothing to be done right now, not until I get more information on what we can do to pressure a change. God, I wish we could do something to cut off the heroin supply to the city!"

'We might not be able to, but I know someone who can...' Nessie thought. She didn't dare say it aloud, though. Her 'partnership' with the Red Hood was something she wanted to keep under wraps. Affiliation with a known gang leader didn't look good for an employee of the city government, after all.

"I'm sorry to hear it," Nessie replied, "we're hobbled enough as it is, and we don't need more obstacles thrown in our way."

"From your lips to God's ears," Felix responded. He straightened his posture a bit and cleared his throat. "Let's put that aside for now. What did you want to discuss, Kapatelis?"

"Well... I was going to ask for access to the non-digitized files to review some old cases, and I still want to do that, but... now I'm thinking we ought to tap the Wayne Foundation for help in closing our funding gap."

The pinched, sour look was back on Felix's face -- and, based on her previous conversation with Jason, Nessie would bet that her boss was remembering his investigation into Bruce Wayne's family and the suspicious death of one of the adopted children in it. He clearly didn't like the reminder that they were, in some part, beholden to the Wayne family and the largesse of its charitable organization.

"I think that well has gone dry," Felix said, rubbing at his bushy mustache. "At least, with Bruce Wayne out of the city again, you'd have to appeal to other people like his... adopted son." Felix actually looked a little pained to describe Timothy Drake-Wayne in that way. "The one who is helping to run Wayne Enterprises, that is."

"You don't think Mr. Drake-Wayne would refuse, do you?" Nessie asked.

"I think you'll have a hell of a time getting him to grant you an appointment to meet," Felix said, "and we don't know if he'll be as generous as Bruce would be in the same situation."

"It can't hurt to ask," Nessie said stubbornly.

Felix smiled faintly. "If you want to go for it, you've got my blessing, Kapatelis. I'll email you the budget information for the past few years, and the projected one for next year. If the Wayne Foundation isn't willing to help, those cold, hard numbers might do a lot to convince the folks in charge. And as for access to the non-digitized case files, you can go ahead with that, too. I'll update your keycard access right now, in fact."

"I appreciate it, Mr. Desidero," Nessie said, smiling back at him.

This was working out really well. Though the budget problems were a negative overall, they were opening doors for her. She'd be able to look into Felix's old case files on Jason Todd, getting things like his old address in Crime Alley. Information on his old neighbors might even be in the file, if they were interviewed in the course of Felix's investigation -- and she might get a lead on the mysterious "Mrs. Walker". Furthermore, the need for financial help from the Wayne Foundation in order to continue assisting seniors and children in the foster care system gave her a reason to visit Wayne Manor. Certainly, it wasn't the normal way of doing things, but this wasn't a normal situation.

"There we go," Felix said. "You're all set for expanded access to the archives."

"I really appreciate this," Nessie started to say, but Felix held up a hand to cut her off.

"Do what you have to, Kapatelis," he said. "I don't need to know all the details, and you just know that I've got your back, whatever you're planning."

Nessie blinked. Did he suspect? Did he know? Had she slipped up somehow, and said or done something that showed a connection to the Red Hoods? She didn't dare ask. That would confirm his suspicions, if he had them.

"I'm just trying to help..." Nessie eventually answered, quietly.

Felix nodded. "I know. And..." He looked at her seriously, with his usual sharp, assessing gaze. One corner of his mouth lifted, into a half-smile. "I trust you, Kapatelis."

No qualifiers, no 'despite everything'... just trust. Nessie smiled, even though she felt her chin wobble from the effort of keeping back tears.

"Thank you, boss."

Gotham City's Own Paris Hilton

[Nessie isn't surprised that there wasn't a lot of turnout for this "Be a Big Sibling" sign up event. Although everyone in Gotham City knows that crime affects the children of the city, there aren't a lot of people willing to help fix that.]

[Of course, the stringent background check required for it might also scare some people off.]

[She hands off a copy of the brochure and says,] "I hope you'll consider being a Big Sibling for one of our foster kids in need! They could use more good influences in their lives."

[The woman smiles at her, and moves on to Nessie's boss for the presentation.]

[Nessie hears another person step up to her table. She holds up another brochure, and says again,] "I hope you'll consider being a Big Sibling for one of our needy foster kids!"

my story so far... [ported from LJ]

[[This was needed because the character is not that well-known. I'm going to try to keep most of these entries in-character, but if there needs to be any further explanation, I'll pop back up in these brackets. ^_^
